Gastrointestinal Evaluation
Detailed gastroscopic examination with high quality images to allow for a thorough examination.
*The horse must be completely fasted (14-16 hours) in order to examine the stomach, otherwise the stomach is full of feed material.
The horse is sedated, and the scope is passed from the nose into the stomach. This is not painful to the horse and most horses have little objection to the procedure.
The stomach is filled with air for examination and suction is used to remove the air at the end of the procedure.
The images are displayed on the video screen so it can be watched during the procedure.
Gastroscopy includes
- Evaluation of the squamous and glandular mucosa including the pylorus
- Evaluation of the current diet
- Discussion on barn management that could play a role in gastric disease
- Ability to perform duodenal biopsy through the scope when warranted
