The Oncept canine melanoma vaccine was developed for use in dogs. It has been tested in horses with melanoma and shown to decrease progression of existing tumors when compared to horses that did not receive the vaccine. However, it is currently only approved for use in dogs so the use in horses is considered off-label.
Vaccine reactions are uncommon and are associated with local swelling, hair loss or lack of efficacy.
